When Supply Tightens, Community Matters More Than Ever

Across Australia and around the world, businesses and communities are navigating a period of sustained economic pressure. Rising fuel costs, ongoing supply chain disruptions, and mounting operating expenses are flowing through to nearly every sector, and the ripple effects are being felt in places you might not expect.

At Good360 Australia, we’re seeing the effects of this firsthand.

Over recent weeks, the volume of brand-new goods arriving at our warehouse has declined. Shelves that were once consistently replenished through generous corporate donations are noticeably leaner. At the same time, demand from our network of charities and schools continues to grow.

This is not a story of hesitation or withdrawal. It’s a reflection of the broader environment many of our partners are operating in, and the sustained impacts on people doing it tough.

A Changing Landscape for Giving

The individuals who rely on our network of charities and schools are already navigating some of life’s hardest moments. They’re managing tight budgets, recovering from crisis, or simply trying to keep up with the cost of living in a way that feels increasingly out of reach. When they reach out for support, it’s often a last resort.

Simply put: when supply tightens, everyday Australians feel the pinch.

It’s the parent trying to get their kids ready for the school year without the budget to cover the basics.

The older person on a fixed retirement income choosing between essentials.

The family rebuilding from almost nothing after escaping a difficult situation.

The gap between what communities need and what’s available is exactly what Good360 Australia exists to close. But right now, that gap is widening.

Our corporate partners have always played a critical role in ensuring useful, high-quality goods reach communities in need. But like many organisations, they are currently managing a complex set of pressures:

  • Increased freight and logistics costs
  • Tighter inventory management
  • Reduced surplus stock
  • Greater financial pressure across operations

These shifts mean there is simply less excess product available to donate.

We recognise that behind every donation decision is a complex set of business realities. Many of our partners are continuing to support communities in ways that are sustainable for them, whether that’s through smaller, more targeted contributions or longer-term partnership planning.

At the Same Time, Need Isn’t Slowing Down

While supply is tightening, the need across communities is not; for people already doing it tough, the timing couldn’t be harder.

Families are stretching budgets further than ever, and charities are being asked to do more with less. When we surveyed our charity and school members in 2025, 82% of organisations stated that community demand for non-food aid had never been higher, and we are continuing to see this trend three months into 2026.

Everyday items such as a warm blanket, a school bag, or a set of bed sheets, things most of us don’t think twice about, are being requested more frequently. For someone already navigating financial hardship, these aren’t small things. They’re the difference between a child starting the school year feeling ready or feeling left behind. Between a family feeling settled, or unsettled and stressed.

This growing gap between supply and demand is something we are actively working to address, but it’s also something we can’t do alone.

Adapting How We Support Communities

Moments like this call for flexibility, collaboration, and new ways of thinking.

As a team, we’re focusing on:

Making every product donation go further: We’re working closely with our charity and school members to move high-need items and ensure fair, impactful distribution.

Strengthening partnerships: Open conversations with our corporate partners are more important than ever. Understanding their constraints allows us to find ways to continue working together in ways that are realistic and meaningful, whether that means adjusted volumes, different product types, or planning donations further ahead.

Exploring new pathways for giving: We’re actively looking at alternative ways businesses can contribute beyond traditional surplus stock. That might include different donation models, logistics partnerships, or other forms of in-kind support. If you’ve got an idea, we want to hear it.

What This Means for Our Network

For our charity and school members, the current environment may mean:

  • Planning further ahead when making product requests
  • Being flexible with available items and categories
  • Exploring alternative options where specific items aren’t available

We’re committed to keeping communication open and transparent, so every member of our network can make informed decisions and plan with confidence.

Looking Ahead, Together

Periods of constraint often reveal the strength of a network.

The current environment is genuinely challenging, but it also underscores something we believe deeply at Good360 Australia: the connection between the government, funders, businesses, charities, and communities is not a nice-to-have. It’s essential infrastructure. The role we play as a connector between those groups by matching generosity with genuine need matters now more than ever.

To our funders and the government, meeting the needs of people in Australia with essential items requires continued funding and commitment. Thank you for your support, especially through crises that increased demand.

To our corporate partners: your continued support, in whatever form it takes, makes a real difference. Thank you for staying in the conversation with us, even when it gets complicated.

To our charity and school members: the work you do on the ground, every day, is what this entire network exists to support. You continue to inspire us.

There is no single solution to the pressures we’re all experiencing. But by staying connected, responsive, and committed to shared outcomes, we can continue to support communities across Australia together.
