Once in 100 year floods – NSW/QLD March 2021
Australians unfortunately are getting used to the phrase ‘once in 100 years’ to describe a recent disaster. First it was the Black Summer bushfires in 2019/20, then COVID-19 and now these words have been used to describe the battering that NSW and Queensland have endured due to severe storms and flooding. The deluge of rain over a week-long period has meant evacuations of homes and property with total destruction in some instances, animals stranded and emergency rescues with flood waters continuing to rise. The total devastation is still yet to be calculated.
COVID-19 created a new sector of vulnerable people who would not normally ask for support – the recent floods are accentuating their plight.
